FOOTBALL RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS....

The inaugural season of The United Football League starts on Thursday and this marks the return of football to Las Vegas with the debut of the Las Vegas Locomotives. Or as the logo says - “Locos.”

So does that mean we are “the crazies”??? I think the only crazy we will see this week is the crazy that our QB JP Losman will do all over the California Redwoods. And what is the “Redoods” mascot going to be? A giant tree?
I do look forward to the day I can take my grandkids to their first Locomotives game. I can tell them I was there for the first play of the first game of this soon to be storied franchise.
I think this is the perfect time to look back at other storied franchises in Las Vegas Football history.
THE LAS VEGAS POSSE (1994):

The only historic element that came from this franchise was the fact that they were one of the first American expansion teams of the Canadian Football League. Games were played at Sam Boyd and only lasted one season.

THE LAS VEGAS STING (1994-1995):

Something needed to fill the void of the missing Las Vegas Posse. That void was filled by the Arena Football League and the Las Vegas Sting. The LV Sting lasted TWO years before moving to Anaheim, CA. I see a trend starting to develop here!
THE LAS VEGAS OUTLAWS (2001):

One would think the combo of the WWE and pro football would be a huge success.

Sadly the XFL only lasted one year. We did get “He Hate Me” out of the XFL. Also, for those of us that lived on the East coast we did not get to watch SNL till 12:15 a.m. I don’t think the executives at NBC were too pleased that their franchise comedy show was getting bumped back 45 minutes so we could watch the end of a game between the San Francisco Demons and the Memphis Maniax. Lord knows those guys from Memphis were Maniacs, because they spelled their name with an “X”

THE LAS VEGAS GLADIATORS (2003-2007)

The Las Vegas Gladiators came to Las Vegas when the new owner brought the team from New Jersey. I remember in 2008 I said to some buddies, “You guys want to go to a Gladiators game this season?” My buddies responded with “They moved to Cleveland.” Oh!
All AFL games were cancelled last year.
I hope you enjoyed this stroll down Las Vegas Football lane and I will see everyone out at Sam Boyd Stadium on November 27 when the Locomotives go for their first UFL title in the Championship Game.
Check back tomorrow when I take a look back at past hockey teams that came through the Las Vegas Valley.
